Google Ads Remarketing.

You know those ads that seem to follow you around across the web? Those are Remarketing (also known as Retargeting) Ads, and they’re perfect for getting sales from people who have previously visited your website.

How does it work?

When you make a Remarketing Google Ads campaign, you’ll be required to add a tag (a small snippet of code) to your website.

This tag identifies users who visit your website, and adds them to a database of users who have visited your site. From there, Google can track them as they move around the web. This gives you a whole audience of potential customers who are primed to spend money with your business — you just have to tap into it.

Why set up a remarketing campaign?

The vast majority of users who visit a website for the first time won’t take action.

There are plenty of reasons why a potential customer doesn’t convert, and many of them have nothing to do with your products. Maybe the customer is browsing, they need some time to consider the purchase, they were interrupted, or they're shopping around for the best deal.

Rather than let them forget about you, Remarketing Google Ads reminds them of how great your offerings are and how much they need them.

Another benefit of remarketing campaigns is that you can choose to focus on new or returning customers. You have complete control over the audience parameters which Google targets, so if you want to target one subset of customers who have visited your website, you can.

For example, maybe you have an e-commerce website and a customer has added items to their cart but hasn't completed the purchase. These individuals have expressed strong interest in your products — you just need them to cross that final hurdle. With remarketing, you can target these almost-purchasers; this tactic tends to have a very high conversion rate. Alternatively, you might be in a business where repeat customers are vital. You can choose to target people who have already purchased your product or service, encouraging them to purchase with your business again.

Remarketing campaigns tend to be very cost effective. Since you’re targeting an audience which is already highly motivated, these campaigns tend to generate much higher click-through-rates and conversion rates than regular Google Search Ads. This means you get a high return on your ad spend.

What are the disadvantages?

  • Traffic limits

There's a built-in limit to the amount of traffic you can generate using remarketing. Since you’re only targeting users who have already visited your website, your audience pool is limited to these individuals.

You'll never generate fresh traffic with remarketing, that's simply the design of the platform. If you want to target new customers, try Google Search Ads

  • It's not for beginners

If your website or business is new, you might not have a big enough audience to run a successful remarketing campaign (due to the limits we just talked about). Most businesses need to have a somewhat established online presence with existing customers in order for a remarketing campaign to generate worthwhile results.

In fact, for a remarketing campaign using Google Display Ads, Google requires at least 100 active visitors within the last 30 days. This is a good thing — if you set up a remarketing campaign with fewer visitors, you’d be throwing away money.

  • Tricky set-up

Remarketing campaigns can be very tricky to set up. There are a lot of technical aspects to setting up audiences in Google Ads, which can be hard to navigate if you’re not familiar with the ins and outs of Google Ads. That’s where we come in.
